“Excellent,” Gronolf said, praising the pilot.

Loknor had landed the shuttle smoothly, right in the middle of the treetops. They hadn’t found a clearing on the ground large enough to accommodate the shuttle. Now it was swaying back and forth a little, but this just seemed to be the treetops’ natural movement.

Loknor stood up. “I’ve got to stretch my legs,” he said.

“I have an idea,” said Gronolf. “We should examine the tree the shuttle is parked on, just for security reasons. We have to make sure it’s stable enough.”

“I’ll come with you,” said Ragnor.

“Stay here at the helm. If anything happens, you’re to initiate an emergency launch immediately. We can’t lose the shuttle.”

“Even if you’re not back on board yet, General?”

“Even then.”

Gronolf was thinking. Ragnor still had the threat of having to fight him for his life hanging over his head, and he might take the opportunity to slip away. But no, he felt indebted to Marchenko, and Numbark was there, too.

“Come, Loknor, let’s go.”

“Do we need anything?”

“The temperatures are bearable. We only need the rappeling equipment.”

“I’ll get it.”

“Let’s meet in the airlock.”
